Here’s one from the archives, specifically, from the Onion archives. It ran about five years ago which I found kind of amazing. First, I can’t believe I’ve been writing for the Onion that long. And second, it’s fascinating to see how much I’ve changed as a puzzle maker in the last five years. Then again, I’ve probably written 6,400 puzzles since this one ran (that’s just an approximation, but it feels about right), so I hope that I’ve gotten better.
Speaking of the Onion, my puzzle’s in the latest issue. Early returns have it as one of my better crosswords. Get it here: [PDF] [Across Lite]. And if you liked both of these puzzles, editor Ben Tausig requests that you consider joining the Inkwell mailing list, will ya?
Thanks to all who were able to donate during the June drive. I was very touched by all of your generosity, and by the kind notes that came with the donations. And, as promised, our randomly selected winner of my latest book “Sex, Drugs & Rock ‘n’ Roll Crosswords” is Lenore Jones of Palo Alto, CA. Congrats to Lenore. (For those who didn’t win, feel free to snag your copy at the above link.)
UPDATE: I forgot to mention to all the Bostonians in the house: I will be doing a seminar on all things crosswords this Wednesday at 6:00 at Grub Street. Space is limited, so sign up for it here.
Share the puzzle. New one on Monday.
You have certainly brought a lot more FLAVOR to your work!
Moyock III referred to my annual bike trek from central Norfolk (near ORF) to Moyock, NC. This is a grueling gantleted route dealing with sharing the road ( mainly Battlefield Blvd, appropriately enuf) with all that nightmarish traffic and yes the temperature was in the low 90s. This might be 45 miles round-trip and lasting 7 hours if I take no breaks. I made very few stops BION. I feel like I’m in the Lao-Tse club. When this was over with, I checked for symptons and all it was tachycardia, jitters, and some sweating. Then I head for the BEQXWP and it was pretty easy.
How much of the difference in the two puzzles is due to editorial standards at the Onion rather than BEQ’s own style? Both very enjoyable in their own way.
Also did the bonus puzzle recently. Also great but needed much Googling on my part. 5D is my nominee for clue of the year. Will we get access to commentary on that puzzle?
6,400?!?!?!
new puzzle was awesome!! you’re definitely getting better!!
Thanks! I’m feeling very lucky indeed.
