Figures that one of the Lollapuzzoolas that I miss something big like Al Sanders finally winning a tournament happens. Just figures. I caught wind of the news on Saturday shortly after it happened and I was just stoked for the guy. Always coming so close, never quite making it. It’s time, methinks that we can drop the Phil Mickelson comparisons now.
Also, from what I can gather, Lolla is now the no-longer little tournament that could. Just south of 200 puzzle devotees flocked to the event. Not only that, but the caliber of puzzles looked to be on par with, perhaps even better than, some recent ACPT offerings. I took a peek at them and without giving any spoilers I’ll say that right now Kevin Der’s contribution is in a class by itself. A towering achievement of theme execution and creativity. By my count there were two “aha moments” and each one accompanied by a long exhalation and a Keanu Reeves-esque “whoa.” Frankly, it’s on the shortlist for Puzzle Of the Year. Interested parties (and there should be a healthy number of you out there) should click here to get their copy of the crosswords.
Share the puzzle. New one on Thursday.
Yep, it was great watching Al get his well-deserved standing ovation! That was a hard final puzzle–Trip only filled in about half the grid!
