This being perhaps the hardest crossvvord on a vveekly basis…..hey! i can categorize them as relatively easy, somevvhat harder, hard as hell, excruciatingly hopelessly hard. But somehovv i manage.

Not equivalent. Homophones are a *subset* of homonyms. The other subset is homographs.
That said, both homonym and homophone would both work as clues.
