This term alludes to the inelegant presentation and nature of the food, in effect, tossing hash before a customer. [Slang; mid-1800s]
God, you’re an insufferable, pedantic tool. From your precious dictionary.com, the definition for hash-slinger –
1. a waiter or waitress, especially in a hash house.
2. a short-order cook.
And I’m sure you’re going to say, but it’s slinger and not hash-slinger! Refer back to the first sentence above.

Good! i just got SKELETOR off my bucket list of desirable ansvver i vvant to see in a Nevv York Times-style crossvvord puzzle. Might be about 2 to 3 thousand of them. Others i’m hoping to see are HABAKKUK, PAREIDOLIA, CONCATENATION, and VAMPIRELLA.
