If there was an ACPT, then there’s a good chance that there’s chatter about the crossword solving AI Dr. Fill. Love him or hate him, it resurfaces every damn year. Put me in the “love him” camp, as I think Matt Ginsberg’s work is mighty impressive. Anyway, a fascinating article by my bud Oliver Roeder goes into all the hairy details of how Dr. Fill finally came out on top. Hey, Will! If you’re reading this, sign me up for a tournament puzzle next year. I’ll crush the machine.
Looking for more puzzles? The Hub Crossword (Sunday puzzles by me and Emily Cox and Henry Rathvon) and Marching Bands year seven have begun. So if that To Do list needs even more puzzles, you know what to do.
Share the puzzle. New one on Monday.
I never heard 32A called that. And, again, way too many popular entertainment references. Another meh.
I glanced at the clue for 35D and blithely entered CAtacOMB, which 31A’ed me up for a few minutes. Once again, everyone: READ THE WHOLE CLUE.
Didn’t take part in this last ACPT but one thing on my Bucket List is to do Ten New York Times-Style Crossword Puzzles along the lines of the essence of the Roald Dahl Short Story “Man From The South” (which coincidentally aired as an episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents on MeTV last night). But I wouldn’t go so far as to gamble a finger in the process. I have to find a prized position that i cherish deeply. I’m utterly confident cuz my correctness (not Accuracy) stat has to be around 99.9% Anyway Theme music should Head Games by Foreigner. That would be splendiferous.
I think my favorite is 53 Across, but they’re all fun. Thanks, Brendan.
I’m a Dr. Fill fan, too — even though he crushed a puzzle I made for the ACPT a few years ago. Solved it faster than I could’ve.
