I AS IN ÎLE-DE-FRANCE: [ ACROSS LITE][ PDF]

My family recently took up the task of learning French. Or in my case, brushing off the dusty/rusty bits and getting back into it. Vocab has come back quick with yours truly. One thing that hasn’t changed for me is my complete and utter inability to pronounce a single thing properly. Talk about a war crime. My mush mouth is atrocious. Still, it’s fun. And it’s funny to hear Tabitha go around speaking French alongside her Duolingo lessons.
Today’s puzzle is brought to you by this family anecdote.

Amusant et drôle! La réponse du Pape m’a particulièrement fait rire. Merci beaucoup, Brendan!
When After The Fire’s Der Commissar comes on the radio, I feel like singing the Je, Je refrain. And I take it to be sounding like the pronoun I in Francais. 37A This was were I did Basic Training in the US Army way back in the Autumn of 1985. Also wondering what Alan Alda, Dr. Dre, Yoko Ono, Brian Eno, ELO, etc. think about having their names show up so many times in the crossword puzzles.
