News broke last week that Manny Nosowsky died on Wednesday. A lovely little obit is here. When I started out making crosswords back in the ’90s, Manny’s stood out as really special stuff. I mean, take a look at his puzzles that ran in the Times. A lot of these grids could run today and nobody would think otherwise. You can’t say this about a lot of puzzles that ran 30 years ago, but you can say that about the majority of Manny’s crosswords from back then. A true pioneer, he will be missed.
Share the puzzle. New one on Thursday.

Thank you for the obit link. Very nice.
Fun puzzle, except for the natick at 16A / 14D. 🙂

Thank you for the link to Manny’s obituary. I really
struggled with his puzzles, yet always looked forward to them.
Thank you for remembering Manny, Brendan…may his memory be a blessing to you. And thank you for the puzzle!
For those of you who have been crossword junkies over the years, like myself, Manny was the gold standard for over three decades. He cranked out endless clever stuff like no one else. He may have even had a hand in writing his own amusing eulogy. It encapsulates a fertile mind who’s life was well lived and shared. What a fitting remembrance to a classy legend!
I have been redoing Thursday and Friday NYT puzzles from the early 2000s and it seems like nearly every Friday has been a Manny Nosowsky puzzle. Like others have said, they were solidly tough, but not tricky in an obnoxious way. He was one of my favorite constructors. Condolences to his family, friends, and many admirers.
