Here’s another moment of life’s rich pageant. My gal Miriam Estrin was visiting London’s Quentin Blake Centre For Illustration recently, and whaddya know? Your boy was up there hanging on the wall. Sure, it was a display of work by Sophy Hollington, but it just so happens that her artwork was surrounding my puzzle on the cover of Puzzle Mania from a few years back (number 2 in the photo. That’s my Petal Puzzle). Don’t let anybody tell you that puzzles aren’t art!

cuffing season? What is that?
From Wikipedia:
“Cuffing season is typically defined as the time of year when single people are thought to actively search for short-term romantic partners to spend the colder months with, typically (in Northern Hemisphere locations) from October through March, culminating with Valentine’s Day. The slang term “cuff” alludes to handcuffs and means metaphorically to attach oneself to another individual.”

A themeless Monday that still feels like life’s rich pageant is my favorite kind of crossword day — no gimmick to lean on, just clean fill and whatever Miriam’s story of the week turns out to be. I run Colony Flow, a guide site for a small ant colony puzzle game, and I get the same quiet satisfaction from a grid that clicks into place without needing a theme to justify it.
SW corner was tough enough but then throw in the typo on 45A and I was cooked. Normally a typo like that I’d overlook but it’s Brendan so you think it’s intentional and you’re trying to figure out what he’s getting at.
