1. Some slick cluing. The second name in 21A is not pronounced like “rate” but “ray-et”, as in two syllables. Riffing on a mental health issue (41A) for entertainment value comes off as tone deaf. 39D is pure train wreck – no cyclist any where ever has, does, or ever will use that term.

2. I’m a cyclist and I had my gear case replaced just a few months ago. That’s what the fine folks at Wheelworks called it and it’s what I call it. Bonnie pronounces her name “RATE” though since she’s got a large fan base in the South, I’m sure that it is often drawled over two or more syllables.

3. Wrenched at a few bike shops in my time and I’ve never heard of a “gear case.” Gear cassette, sure, but case, no. Then again, Boston.

4. This one was driving me crazy until I came here and realized that the Washington City Paper forgot to publish the furthest right-hand column.

5. Tone deaf? A little over-sensitive, aren’t we?

6. I’ve been a BR fan for 40 years. It’s pronounced “rate”.
