2013 marked the untimely passing of the website of one of my brothers in indie puzzling. In June of this year, Andrew Ries put out his last (insane) Rows Garden puzzle. I liked his work because it felt like an homage to the master Patrick Berry (who created the form in the first place), but it also felt very much like Andrew’s thing. Like, for instance, I highly doubt Patrick would have ever put the amazing seed entry that Andrew did in Row A of this puzzle. So anyway, I got an email last week from Andrew saying he was relaunching his Aries Puzzles website, Lazarus-style, next year. So, that means, more Rows Garden puzzles. Andrew’s implementing the Radiohead model of “pay what you can,” so if you got extra clams in the pocket, think about throwing him a couple, will ya? And until then you’ve got 118 (118!) freebies to go through. That ought to keep you busy.

This doesn’t mean this site is going the subscription model route. Far from it. This is just a way of you saying thanks, and me returning the favor. Oh yeah, speaking of speed solving legends, “Steely” Dan Feyer showed up in a CBS News story about the crossword centennial. As well as some guy called Will Shortz. Fun stuff.

I’d like to ask Brendan how hard it is to make a puzzle. I was just fooling around with a 4 x 4 area and it can be quite frustrating to create something just within that space. Thanks for all your puzzles btw.
Years later I’m making a correction to a clue: 62A. That is a decoration to many drinks: Scotch and soda, a martini, and (if you want to be cryptic) The Liberal cocktail – a Manhattan variation.
You NEVER garnish a Manhattan with that answer unless asked to by a patron. You garnish with a brandied cherry. (Not the florescent kind.)
