Heads up: I have today’s LA Times crossword. Get it here: [Across Lite]. I also did an interview with C. C. at her “Crossword Corner” blog. You can read it here. Enjoy.
So we’re in England now, and ready for the holidays. Good times. Remind me, at some point, to tell the story of when I tried to bring a leatherman onto a flight to Minneapolis. Hilarity ensued. Also, remind me to tell you about the time at Reagan National Airport where I missed my flight due to a combination of “clever” rescheduling on Delta’s part (so it wasn’t their fault, right, pfft), and my overboozing at the bar. Hilarity definitely ensued there. Anyway, at least with this flight to England we did it (pretty much) direct. Unlike last year where we spent a glorious nine hours wandering around Charles de Gaulle in a jet-lagged stupor on Christmas morning, waiting for the connecting flight to Manchester. That really sucked.
But enough about travel. We’re here. I shall report on how I do with all my sad sack attempts at the British cryptics, oh I dunno, Monday?
This puzzle ran in Paste a few months ago, so forgive the rerun. Since it’s time to see the in-laws, I thought a family-themed puzzle would be good.
Share the puzzle. New one on Friday.
If you tackle the Times cryptic, there’s a blog for that—Times for the Times. They explain all the answers. (Just ignore the part where they say it took four minutes and change to solve the thing. Give me an hour and I can make a good dent in a British cryptic.)
Fun theme!
This one fell quick for me since I know the show well (even knew the creator’s name). Only 18 seconds behind Reynaldo!
Have fun over there. If you see a sign that says ‘Merrie Olde England’ take a pic and put it on your blog.
I’ll see what I can do.
Minneapolis, Brendan? Do you have some family or friends here in the North Star State?
Thanks for a kinder, gentler solving experience this a.m. Happy Whatever You Celebrate, and say hi to the Queen.
Really, really good cluing in this one. 10A “Symbol in Funke…” Wow. How do Constructors come up with stuff like that? Only snags due to living in Austin, Tejas, which has scrambled by ability to spell Jane’s name correctly on cue. And, because most of the cantinas where I go to watch soccer use the Spanish channel, I earnestly tried to make some variation of GOL!! work for 39A.
Also interesting seeing the BCE thing again so soon after JNE went ballistic about it on Rex’s NYT blog a few days ago.
Hmmm…December in Manchester? I have managed not to be jealous! But Happy Christmas!
York, actually. Just flew in through Manchester.
I’d give this one nine stars if I could. Right now I’m wearing a T-shirt that says ORANGE COUNTY PRISON – NO TOUCHING!
Great LAT puzzle too. Merry Christmas!
Are the pieces of MAEby and BLUth intentional? Now I’m wondering what else I missed.
Anyway, my time was pretty bad, but this is the first puzzle of yours I’ve solved in a while without any cheating. Thanks for calling it “medium”; nice ego boost there.
MEH CULPA = Bored of Guilt.
Without the straightforward crosses on the KRS-One, Boho Boot, Elastica and Replacements clues, I would have been lost.
Stylish ALERO?
Enjoy your sojourn.
I think this one might have been closer to an “easy” than a “medium”. I believe it’s one of the fastest BEQ I’ve done yet, and I’m not even that familiar with the theme.
Fantastic. I’m re-watching Arrested Development for the umpteenth time right now, and this puzzle couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. I did so well, I feel like Mr. Manager.
I finished this in a Monday time. Without knowing the slightest thing about Arrested Development, the show, except that it’s something you watch. In my world, Arrested Development is a legendary rap crew. Suffice it to say this puzzle wasn’t for me, which is fine. The LAT was great though! And a surprise, you don’t seem to do to much work with Rich Norris, at least in the 18 months I’ve been solving crosswords.
