Happy Columbus Day everybody. Forgive me as I took the day off to visit my sister out at the Kripalu yoga center out in Western Mass. Gotta love and gotta take advantage of the three day weekends. Even if Liz can’t figure out why there’s a holiday named after the director of “Home Alone.”
Anyway, this one’s an oldie-but-goody from my Time Out New York days. Enjoy.
Share the puzzle. Themeless Wednesday is coming up next.
One of those puzzles that’s much easier if you start from the bottom and work your way up.
A day off! I call bullshit! Back to work, you layabout!
This one was great, tho’ the NE (esp DO SHOTS!?) beat me around a bit.

Nice work!
One tip from a Californian — despite the fact that it is occasionally handy in fill, and despite the fact that it has appeared in crosswords before, “UCAL” is NOT shorthand for the University of California.
There are a number of legit shorthands (UC, UC system, Cal, Cal-Berkeley), but I’ve never seen or heard “UCAL” outside of a crossword.
If this was from TONY, I must’ve done it back in the day–perhaps that’s why I managed to actually get through this one in “record” time for a MEDIUM. In any case, it felt fresh to me, and therefore solid.
Never would have finished this without the reveal clue at 48A. Fun puzzle, And yes, UCAL will incite riots. Hope you enjoyed your holiday. Spent my weekend at a bridge tournament!
Puzzle was a chore to solve, since I dont give a rat’s ass about Elvis Presley, and by extension, all the Elvises in the puzzle!
seconded by a berkeley native.
You should have managed to get “Grbac” in there somehow; that would have given fits the same way “Hrbek” often does what with the odd consonant sequence involved at the beginning of the word. Also, a big shout-out for making Elvis Costello an answer. He is one of my all-time musical faves, although lately, not so much. I try to get a Costello reference into each puzzle I (try to) write, although sometimes it doesn’t quite work out.
Fun! Needed 48A to get it, then boom, the puzzle did itself…
Wikipedia says Jewel lip-synced SB XXXII, not XXXIII. Cher did the latter and I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how to get her name in five squares.
Are you still using “themeless”? All the cool kids call it “freestyle” these days.
Note to self: don’t do BEQ’s crosswords with a wicked head cold. This one kicked my butt. Had to look at the solution after about five minutes. Ugh, more benadryl, please…I liked the crossing of CREEPO and DCUPS 🙂 We are fostering a dachshund by the name of ELVIS but the name never came to me – I kept thinking Brad Pitt for some reason. P.S. If you are in the NW and are in the market for a dachshund…Let me know 🙂
NE was terrific! DOSHOTS, CREEPO, DCUPS… Sort of a college frat party of a corner…
nice one! never heard of mitchell. too bad QUARTERBACK GRBAC is 16 letters. you could have had a CKGRB sequence in the middle of a theme answer!
Well done. But I’ve never heard EXACTA in my life, and CREEPO is pushing it, too.
Otherwise, nicely done.
