DOUBLE TROUBLE: [ ACROSS LITE][ PDF]
PROGRAMS: [Across Lite] [Adobe Reader]
Well, I can say for sure that I completely broke today’s AL file. I have a theme that simply cannot be shown as correct by the program. Fascinating that this is the industry standard, while puzzles are being pushed further and further past AL’s technical abilities. As a solver, I guess it doesn’t bother me too too much as the majority of my own solving habits nowadays are weird variety puzzles and/or overseas cryptics, and pretty much 100% of those puzzles have to be solved on paper.I just stuff my pockets full of them when I’m taking Tabitha to the playground or something. But really, though, on-screen solving is where the future is, and well, we’re sorely lacking in software to reflect the genre-breaking puzzles that are becoming more and more commonplace. Surely to God there is some mad genius in her dorm room somewhere coding said program as we speak. And if she’s out there, have her get in touch with me. I’ve got ideas of how to make this theoretical program better.
Share the puzzle. New one on Monday.
Well, that certainly explains Mr. Happy Pencil’s inability to grok the right answer for 54D. Excellent puzzle, even if (especially because?) it befuddled AL.
BEQ–love your puzzles and love paper and pencil. Not as much fun solving online. Have a good day. Jane
I’m a pen-and-paper solver, but I prefer to print from AL because I can control grid placement, toner usage and font size. I’m gathering from the comments that the issue isn’t with AL’s inability to render the puzzle on the page, but rather the fact that some gimmick makes it trickier to solve online.
Great puzzle today. Great song, too.
I don’t recall when it became available, but a Rebus button is present on at least some (not sure if it’s always there) crossword puzzles “powered by PuzzleMe” that I access via the Washington Post.

You mention weird variety puzzles and overseas cryptics? Why are your go-to sites for finding these? You do great work as always.
Thanks for referring to that future coder as a “she!” Indeed, she’s out there.
FWIW, it worked OK in http://www.crosswordsolver.info/
This is completely solvable in Puzzazz — just import the .puz file.
