For all the east coast fans of the BEQ.com, I have two announcements for this upcoming Saturday.
First up: it’s the Boston Crossword Puzzle tournament. Technically, it’s Harvard University Crossword Tournament, but those who run it were kind enough to open it up to the greater Cambridge area. For this year, all of the puzzles will be by Boston-based constructors: Pat Duggan, Will Johnston, Joon Pahk, David Quarfoot, and some jerk named Brendan Emmett Quigley. Stalkers take note: most of those folks will be in the house. The inimitable Will Shortz will be in attendance as well. Best part? The tickets are a measly $10. Click here for more information.
Secondly, my old band, Hip Tanaka, will be doing a one-off reunion show Saturday night at Great Scott in Allston. To whet your appetite, I’ve put up our two best albums for free on our tumblr page. As an added bonus, I’ll be giving a copy of “Diagramless Crosswords” to every person who goes to both events.
Share the puzzle. New one on Thursday.
You’d think I’d have learned by now. When a guy named Charl wins the Masters, it’s note to self time.
Battleaxe, absconded, beholders, mistletoe: must be a BEQ.
Maybe a little easier than most “hards” cause the long downs fell pretty quickly.
Nice to see Valerie Solanis and Bill Hicks in the weekend XWPs.
I had a rough time with the 7th nonant. Can somebody tell me who Charles Wartzell is? Or Suzuki?
Anyway this was just another one of those ” I can’t believe I made it through” XWPs. Took some doing!
@James – It’s “Charl Schwartzel” and he is a South African golfer who just won the Masters’ tournament last weekend. As is tradition, the winner receives a green jacket and it is presented to him by the previous year’s winner; in this case, that was Phil Mickelson.
“Suzuki” refers to Ichiro Suzuki, the star outfielder for the Seattle Mariners’ baseball team.
Hope this helps,
Andy
I didn’t bother to check when I was solving, but I thought maybe the Mariner was a Suzuki model of car. Though, now that I think about it, that probably wouldn’t be the best name for one.
“Who’s the U-boat commander?”
Hey! Mickelson and Couples.
Enjoyed it, BEQ – lasted exactly the length of my subway ride last night. Can’t beat that. I know I had more fun than the two guys doing the AMNY puzzle next to me.
Glad that CS made the puzzle after expecting him last week (and thumbs up for not wasting the crossing Z), but couldn’t remember VALERIE without a few crossings. As I recall, ABC KIDS is a programming block, not a network in its own right – but I still knew what you meant immediately.
